Guangzhou China, 4K, Grandview Aquarium (广州正佳极地海洋世界) — located inside the Grandview Mall in Guangzhou, China (广州) — is one of the most well-known and controversial aquariums in Asia. Built as part of one of the world’s largest shopping malls, it combines retail, leisure, and marine life exhibits under one massive roof, offering visitors a surreal experience where modern urban life meets the underwater world.
Inside, the aquarium features massive tanks and immersive underwater tunnels that allow visitors to walk beneath schools of tropical fish, stingrays, and even sharks gliding silently overhead. The tanks are illuminated with colorful lights, creating a dreamlike aquatic environment that contrasts with the busy shopping atmosphere just outside.
The design and structure of the aquarium emphasize modern aesthetics — curved glass tunnels, themed zones, and vivid lighting effects simulate diverse marine habitats from the polar regions to tropical coral reefs. Visitors can explore sections featuring penguins, seals, turtles, and various species of jellyfish, as well as educational displays about ocean conservation and marine ecosystems.
However, Grandview Aquarium is also widely known for the international controversy it sparked soon after opening. The facility once exhibited a polar bear named Pizza, who became infamous online as “the world’s saddest polar bear.” Photos and videos of the bear pacing inside an artificial enclosure under artificial lights went viral, leading to global criticism from animal welfare groups. Since then, there have been growing calls for reform and relocation of large mammals to more suitable environments.
Today, despite its controversies, the aquarium continues to attract hundreds of thousands of visitors annually, especially families and tourists seeking to explore marine life up close while visiting the Grandview Mall — one of Guangzhou’s premier commercial and entertainment destinations.
Step into the mesmerizing world of Guangzhou's Grandview Aquarium, a unique blend of urban retail and underwater wonder. This vlog takes you through dazzling displays, from vibrant coral reefs to the icy realms of penguins and seals. Witness sharks and rays glide overhead in immersive tunnels, but be prepared for the poignant story of Pizza, the polar bear, a reminder of the ongoing debate surrounding animal welfare in captivity. It's a journey through stunning marine life, sparking awe and reflection.
