Shanghai had other plans in store for OurTwoStepStart, but that only made this travel vlog better. What started as a packed day—museum, gardens, and even a bungee jump—turned into an unexpected but brilliant adventure full of dinosaurs, cheap eats, and a cosy hotel room. The opening scenes capture the couple's excitement as they check into a new hotel right on the water, with views of the river and a plan to explore a different side of the city.
Breakfast becomes a playful blind taste test: cold spicy Liangpi noodles, creamy drinks, and a plum juice that sparked very strong opinions. Amy skips the noodles, but the moment doubles as a nod to a friend's China bingo card, adding a personal, inside-joke charm. Along the way, they exchange warm hellos with locals, spot birds by the river, grab a super cheap meat pie, and stumble into an authentic local snack shop—exactly the kind of spontaneous discovery that makes travel memorable.
The heart of the video is Shanghai's Natural History Museum, Jack's pick and absolute passion. Amy starts unimpressed but quickly gets swept up in the sheer scale of it all. The five-story dinosaur hall leaves her with jelly legs, and the couple spends ages admiring giant skeletons, cave lions, woolly rhinos, and all kinds of beautifully odd creatures. There are playful moments—choosing which animal to fight, comparing a brain display to a rock, and laughing at the museum's SpongeBob-shaped ice cream, which somehow looks exactly like the cartoon. It's the kind of silly, genuine interaction that turns a simple museum trip into a memorable shared experience.
After exploring half the museum, they stop for coffee and pizza before diving back into the exhibits, including a giant camel, a mongoose vs. squirrel debate, and some seriously impressive animal specimens. They even make it through the gift shop with their willpower intact. Leaving the museum, the couple walks back to their new home for a couple of nights: the Campanile Hotel. It's only ten minutes from the museum, right in a popular area of central Shanghai, and costs around £40 a night for a private room and bathroom—a solid win for budget travelers. The room is spacious, has a hairdryer (which Amy loves), and the couple can finally relax.
But the day takes a quieter turn when Amy starts feeling unwell. The bungee jump and Pokémon Center get postponed, and instead, they order McDonald's to the hotel room. What follows is an honest and funny fast-food taste test: Angus burgers, chicken nuggets, chips, apple slices, and McFlurries. The chips are disappointingly cold, but the burgers impress, and the little ice packs in the McFlurry boxes are a fun surprise. It's a reminder that even an unplanned night in can become a highlight when you're travelling with someone you enjoy spending time with.
Wrapping up, OurTwoStepStart encourage viewers to subscribe for more Shanghai and travel content. This vlog isn't just about ticking off a museum; it's about adapting, laughing through plan changes, and finding joy in small moments—whether that's a dinosaur skeleton, a cheap hotel find, or a shared McDonald's meal in China.
Plans change, but the adventure doesn't stop in Shanghai. OurTwoStepStart check into a budget hotel, brave a blind breakfast taste test, and come face-to-face with towering dinosaurs at the Natural History Museum. A rainy night leads to a cheeky McDonald's feast, proving that even unexpected detours make unforgettable travel memories.

It was massive, five stories high, and the dinosaur skeletons gave me jelly legs. I wasn't expecting to love it so much, but it was actually one of the best things we've done in Shanghai.
What did the cold noodles taste like?
They looked a bit like leftover microwave noodles and were served cold, but the sauce at the bottom made them interesting. I didn't eat them, but the creamy drink was lovely.
Where did you stay and was it good value?
We stayed at the Campanile Hotel, about a ten-minute walk from the Natural History Museum. It was around £40 a night for our own room and bathroom, which felt like a real bargain for central Shanghai.
How was McDonald's in China?
The Angus beef burger was genuinely good, and the McFlurry came with little ice packs to keep it cool. The chips would have been amazing warm, but they were cold by the time we ate them.
