We arrived in Beijing and honestly, it's not what we expected. The city is massive, modern, and bustling with energy. We started our day by visiting the Forbidden City, which was absolutely stunning. The architecture and history here are incredible. After that, we explored the hutongs, the traditional alleyways, and grabbed some street food. The jianbing was amazing. We also visited Tiananmen Square, which felt very grand and significant. The contrast between old and new in this city is fascinating. We're excited to explore more of China.
Later, we went to a local market and tried some authentic Beijing duck. It was so flavorful and crispy. The locals were friendly and helpful, even with the language barrier. We also took a walk through a park and saw people practicing tai chi and playing mahjong. It felt very peaceful amidst the busy city. We're really enjoying our time here and can't wait to see what else China has to offer.
BangAverage touches down in Beijing and immediately realizes this isn't the China they imagined. The Forbidden City leaves them awestruck, while the hutongs serve up sizzling jianbing and local charm. From the grandeur of Tiananmen Square to the crispy perfection of Peking duck, every moment is a surprise. They even stumble upon a serene park where locals practice tai chi—a quiet counterpoint to the city's electric pulse. It's a raw, unfiltered first taste of China that's equal parts chaotic and captivating.

BangAverage wraps up their incredible 10-day transit visa adventure in Beijing, China's sprawling capital, and from the very start, this couple is full of surprises. They kick things off by wandering down Dashing Lane, a vibrant street market where they soak up the local atmosphere, grabbing beef jerky and postcards, and marveling at the elaborate architecture and intricate detailing on every building. Johnny and Vicky are clearly loving the slower pace of exploring without a strict itinerary, just mooching about and soaking in the city's unique energy.

One of the biggest themes that comes through is how affordable everything is. From taxis to meals, they're constantly blown away by the value. For a meal featuring half a duck to share, sweet and sour pork, spring onion noodles, and two large beers, the total came to just £20. The food itself is a massive highlight. The sweet and sour pork is described as having a light, crispy batter that dissolves in the mouth, and the Peking duck is absolutely insane, especially when dipped in oyster sauce. They even debate the best way to eat it, rolling, dipping, and enjoying every last bite, calling it one of the best meals of their entire trip.

The couple also touches on the warm and curious reception they receive as foreigners. They note that while they get plenty of stares, it's never unfriendly, just curious. Locals have been happy to take pictures with them, and the overall atmosphere has been incredibly accepting. They even stumble upon a group of older locals dancing in the park, which adds to the spontaneous charm of their day.

Later in the evening, they head to the Temple of Heaven, only to discover that many of the scenic spots close before the park itself, leaving them exploring in pitch darkness. Still, they take it in stride, finding the experience quite nice and even funny. They recommend visiting earlier in the day and wearing bug spray to avoid the mosquitos. Overall, BangAverage delivers a heartfelt and relatable look at Beijing, proving that sometimes the best travel moments come from simply wandering without a plan.

The whole meal for two, including half a duck, sweet and sour pork, noodles, and two large beers, only cost £20. Incredible value.
What was it like visiting the Temple of Heaven at night?
The park was open but very dark. Most of the scenic spots were closed, so we couldn't see much of the temple itself. It was still nice, but I'd recommend going earlier in the day.
How did locals react to you in Beijing?
People were very friendly and curious. Many stared, but not in a bad way, and lots of people wanted to take pictures with us. Everyone was welcoming.
