Join me as I take one of China's classic green skin trains- an overnight sleeper from Dali to Xishuangbanna, deep in the heart of Yunnan Province. This slow, nostalgic ride is nothing like the high-speed trains most people imagine when they think of China. It's loud, rocky, charming… and I didn't sleep a wink. 😅

In this video, I share what it's really like onboard a hard sleeper on China's green train, how much it costs (only 170 RMB!), what the journey looks like, and why I think it's worth it.

We'll be crossing into China's tropical south, near the borders of Laos and Myanmar, heading towards the vibrant region of Xishuangbanna. The ticket price is a striking detail, clocking in at about 170 RMB, which helps set expectations for budget travelers considering a similar night ride. The route crosses into southern China near Laos and Myanmar, framing the trip as a foray into a tropical, border-adjacent region and showcasing the raw beauty of slow travel in Yunnan as opposed to rushed tourism. Sophie emphasizes that this is travel “
