Taklamakan Desert Overland in China with Police Escort | Itc
In this episode, I ride with Bing through the Taklamakan desert, the largest desert of China. There is only one small town, right in the middle, because there is oil/gas hidden kilometers below the sand surface.
Here I teach all my filming techniques including getting drone shots while riding!
In this episode, a solo motorcycle journey crosses China’s Taklamakan Desert, the continent’s largest desert. The route passes a single small town roughly in the middle, with oil and gas hidden beneath the sand. The ride is challenging, with extreme heat, endless dunes, and long stretches of emptiness. An important moment is the arrival of a Chinese police escort, illustrating how authorities can assist in securing permissions and safety on remote overland routes. The rider also explains filming techniques, including capturing drone shots while on the move. Overall, the episode blends adventure, technical skill, and a window into the logistics of overlanding in one of China’s most extreme environments. The desert’s silence, the heat, and the sense of solitude are contrasted with moments of practical support and the narrator’s passion for storytelling through motorbike travel.
In this episode, Itchy Boots teams up with Bing to tackle the mighty Taklamakan Desert, the largest desert in China. The journey threads through vast, sandy seas with only a single small town roughly in the center, a lonely beacon amid kilometers of oil and gas hidden beneath the dunes. The terrain is punishing, heat intense, and the isolation profound, yet the ride unfolds with a sense of cautious optimism as the riders navigate the shifting sands on a vintage Yamaha Tenere. A notable twist here is the escort from Chinese police, adding a layer of safety and local procedure to the overland mission, a reminder that crossing some of China’s most remote landscapes often involves interaction with authorities for route permissions and safety. Throughout the episode, Itchy Boots reveals her filming setup and techniques, including how she captures drone footage while riding, offering viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the craft of adventure motorcycling content creation. The journey begins in Hotan, an oasis town on the southern Silk Route. The rider, Itchy Boots, explains that she and Bing are about to cross the Taklamakan Desert, China's largest and one. After a tough morning through traffic lights in Xinjiang, they stop for a meal of black mushroom and crispy treats. As the heat rises, they navigate fuel range anxiety, pass camels, and reach a remote village. Here, the police are intensely curious, asking if she's American or if Bing is her husband. They end up escorting the pair through the village, even watching them eat barbecue and naan soup. Back on the road, they pass through the 'green corridor'—an irrigation system that keeps the shifting dunes from swallowing the pavement. The desert is the second largest shifting sand desert in the world. They arrive at Tazong, the most isolated town on earth inside a dune desert. Unexpectedly, a friend takes them on a wild side-by-side ride over the dunes at sunset. The episode ends with a spicy local snack: pig feet with chili. Itchy Boots sums it up as a mental, roller-coaster-like experience that blows your mind.

Tazong, a town in the middle of the Taklamakan Desert with only 1,000 permanent residents and sand dunes in every direction.
How did you avoid running out of fuel?
We rode carefully, watched our fuel range, and planned to buy a few extra liters at small villages along the route.
What was the police escort like?
They were very curious, asked if I was American or if Bing was my husband, then escorted us through the village and even watched us eat.
Did you try any local food?
Yes, I tried pig feet with dried chili. It was sticky, spicy, and quite good, though I've had pig brain before which was more disgusting.
