🇨🇳 Welcome to Hohhot, the capital of Inner Mongolia, China!
When most people think of Inner Mongolia, they imagine endless grasslands, horses, and Mongolian nomads. But I decided to explore the streets of Hohhot, a city with a rather unexpected history.
Our adventure begins at Jiangjun Yashu, the old Qing Dynasty General's Office, where imperial officials once governed this region of China.
From there, we wander into Saishang Old Street, a historic trading area connected to the old commercial routes between China and Mongolia. Once upon a time, merchants passed through this region carrying goods across vast distances. Today, the streets are filled with traditional buildings, shops, and local life.
After finding somewhere for lunch, we make our way to Dazhao Temple, one of the oldest and most important Buddhist temples in Hohhot. A remarkable place with centuries of history.
But then the weather decides to ruin our plans. The heavens open, and we're caught in a massive downpour!
Not to be defeated by a little Inner Mongolian rain, we continue exploring and visit Hohhot's Great Mosque, a fascinating reminder of the different cultures and religions that have shaped this city.
Finally, we finish our journey at the impressive Bao'erhan Pagoda.
Buddhist temples, Qing Dynasty officials, historic trading streets, Islamic architecture, and torrential rain. Not quite what I expected when I arrived in Inner Mongolia!
Join me for another adventure through a lesser-known corner of China, exploring the places and stories that many foreign visitors never get to see.

Ryan Shane Palmer
Ryan Shane Palmer spends a day exploring Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, after introducing it as a city in China distinct from the country of Mongolia. He visits Jiangjun Yashu, described as the Qing Dynasty General's Office, and the old trading street identified in the description as Saishang Old Street, where he stops for lunch and samples local dishes. He then visits Dazhao Temple. Rain interrupts the route, and streets near the Great Mosque appear partly flooded before he continues to Bao'erhan Pagoda. Several food and place-name details in the transcript are unclear, so they are left unexpanded.

Ryan Shane Palmer
Ryan Shane Palmer opens by explaining that Inner Mongolia is part of China, not the country of Mongolia, and says he will explore its capital, Hohhot. He visits Jiangjun Yashu, describing it as old offices where military officials worked during the Qing Dynasty. He heads to a historic street for lunch and points out stalls selling snacks, tea and other goods. A local orders several dishes for him; he clearly identifies pork intestines with coriander, while some food names are forgotten or unclear. He visits Dazhao Temple and says he cannot film in certain parts. He describes its Buddhist practices and decoration, then notices dark clouds and rain. He tries to continue to a mosque by taxi. Heavy rain leaves streets near the mosque partly flooded; he visits the mosque and later Bao'erhan Pagoda. At the pagoda he says it was built in 2006, contains more than 2,000 Buddhist statues and was funded by donations. The title and description identify Hohhot and the landmarks, while some transcript spellings, including the old street and mosque names, are garbled. The transcript is English, but it cannot establish the speaker's accent or whether he is on camera.

3:07 The creator stops for lunch on the old street and sees stalls selling snacks, tea and other goods. If you want to browse before eating, allow time to look around; the transcript does not identify a specific restaurant or stall.
8:09 The creator says many visitors are entering Dazhao Temple and that he has to push through the crowd. Allow extra time for busy periods, or ask locally when the temple is quieter; the video gives no timetable.
8:38 The creator says filming is not allowed in some parts of Dazhao Temple. Check signs and staff instructions before recording, and be prepared to put the camera away in restricted areas.
9:55 Rain begins during the outing, and the creator later describes streets near the mosque as partly flooded. Check the weather and leave room to change your route or transport plans during heavy rain.
