Shangri-La, a city high on the Tibetan Plateau in Yunnan province, immediately feels different from anywhere else in China. Eoin and Aisling set out to experience the region's rich Tibetan culture, starting in the Dukezong Ancient Town with its stunning golden roofs and intricate architecture. The highlight is the world's largest prayer wheel—21 meters tall, weighing 60 tons, and requiring a team of about 40 people to turn. Eoin jumps in to help but quickly finds himself out of breath, partly due to the 3,100-meter altitude. The effort is rewarded with breathtaking views of snow-capped mountains and the ancient town below. The couple also explores a local park with a giant Buddha statue (where photography is not allowed) and wanders through the colorful, peaceful streets lined with souvenir shops and food stalls. They stumble upon a square with a beautiful stupa, surrounded by prayer wheels, where locals offer photo opportunities with baby goats—a quirky local trend. The adventure continues at the Songzanlin Monastery, the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yunnan. Founded in 1679 and modeled after the Potala Palace in Tibet, the monastery sits by a serene lake against a backdrop of snowy peaks. Eoin and Aisling walk 20 minutes from the ticket gate (55 RMB) through local villages and fields. Inside, they climb 146 steps to the main prayer hall, where they witness monks chanting and playing drums—a deeply moving, spiritual experience they cannot film out of respect. The monastery, once housing 2,000 monks, now hosts about 700. After hours of exploration, they reflect on Shangri-La's unique calm—no honking horns, no shouting, just a peaceful, relaxed vibe. Eoin declares it a strong contender for his favorite place in China, praising the fir-tree-lined streets and the magical atmosphere. The vlog also features a sponsored segment for TomTuk bags, highlighting their new travel gear as they prepare for further adventures across China.
Join Eoin and Aisling as they uncover what may be China's most magical destination—Shangri-La. From turning the world's largest prayer wheel with 40 strangers to exploring a stunning Tibetan monastery, this adventure is packed with authentic cultural moments that will leave you spellbound.

It was a real team effort—about 40 people pulling together, but it was heavy! At 3,100 meters altitude, I was out of breath quickly, but the view from the top was stunning.
How did Shangri-La get its name?
It was originally called Jung Dian, but in 2021 it was renamed Shangri-La based on the 1933 novel Lost Horizon, which described a magical Himalayan paradise that matched this area perfectly.
What was the most surprising thing you saw in the old town?
Definitely the baby goats being rented out for photo shoots! People were walking them on leashes like dogs—totally unexpected but hilarious.
