Hello everyone! First of all, sorry for not uploading on a weekly basis recently. I miss you guys so much. So this week I have been preparing a very special long episode on What I like and dislike about China. In this episode of "What I Like & Dislike about China," FunFancie, a Thai expat living in Shanghai, shares her experiences after almost a year in the city. She bases her observations primarily on her life in Shanghai, acknowledging that her perspective might not represent all of China.
FunFancie starts by highlighting the incredible convenience of life in Shanghai. The ubiquitous use of QR codes for payments and ordering, coupled with readily available apps for everything, makes daily life remarkably efficient. This cashless society is a major positive for her.
Another aspect FunFancie loves is the cleanliness of Shanghai's streets. The dedication of the city's street cleaners is evident in the impeccable condition of the streets, a stark contrast to what she's used to. This constant maintenance creates a pleasant and visually appealing environment.
While she enjoys practicing her Chinese, FunFancie notes the occasional communication barrier due to the limited English proficiency among some residents. This presents both a challenge and an opportunity for language learning, creating a bittersweet experience. She wishes for more English fluency in specific scenarios, such as banking or hotel bookings.
Safety is another significant advantage of living in Shanghai, according to FunFancie. She feels safe walking at night and notes the relaxed attitude towards personal belongings, such as leaving laptops unattended in cafes. This sense of security contributes positively to her overall experience.
Shanghai's beauty is a recurring theme in FunFancie's observations. She admires the blend of European and traditional Chinese architecture, creating a unique and aesthetically pleasing cityscape. The iconic Pearl Tower is a constant presence in her daily life, adding to the city's charm.
However, FunFancie also addresses some drawbacks. She points out the prevalence of public smoking, which she finds unpleasant. The extreme weather conditions, with scorching summers and freezing winters, are another challenge she highlights. Despite this, she cherishes the four distinct seasons, particularly the beautiful spring blooms, which are readily available and free to enjoy unlike in her home country.
FunFancie also discusses the social dynamics of Shanghai. She observes that people are often direct and might push past others without apologies in crowded spaces, which initially felt uncomfortable but is now understood as a cultural norm. The large expat community provides a sense of comfort and opportunity for making new friends.
The cost of living, particularly rent, is a significant drawback. FunFancie mentions the high rental costs, referring viewers to a previous video for more details on this topic. Despite the challenges, she appreciates the many opportunities to meet new people and the city's overall friendliness.
Food is another major highlight. FunFancie expresses her love for the diverse and delicious Chinese cuisine, mentioning specific dishes she enjoys, and emphasizes that she doesn't miss food from home. The abundance of international food options further enhances the culinary scene.
Transportation is a positive aspect. FunFancie praises the affordable and convenient Shanghai Metro system, highlighting its affordability and extensive reach. The readily available and inexpensive shared bikes provide another efficient mode of transportation.
FunFancie's vlog concludes with a reflection on various aspects of Shanghai life, including the abundance of parks, the active elderly population, and the prevalence of cute dogs. She also touches upon the challenges of transferring money internationally, the limited number of holidays, and the blocking of certain international websites and social media platforms. Throughout the video, FunFancie's enthusiasm for Shanghai is evident, even as she acknowledges the challenges of living in such a dynamic and contrasting city.
FunFancie's latest vlog dives into the captivating contrasts of life in Shanghai. From the unparalleled convenience of a cashless society and spotless streets to the challenges of language barriers and expensive rent, FunFancie shares both the joys and frustrations of expat life in China's bustling metropolis. Prepare to be charmed by her unique insights and vivid descriptions of Shanghai's beauty, culture, and people.
FunFancie shares her love-hate relationship with Shanghai: convenient tech, stunning architecture, delicious food, but also expensive rent and language hurdles. A must-watch for China travel inspiration!
