Hainan, the tropical island in the south of China, is a popular tourist destination for mainland Chinese and is often referred to as "China’s Hawaii." I started my trip to Hainan with a visit to its capital city: Haikou.
After spending time in Guangzhou and Shenzhen, arriving in Haikou — a tier 3 city with a population of just 3 million — felt almost like a culture shock. I was genuinely surprised by the people, the markets, and the architecture as I wandered through the colourful streets of the Old Town.

Cori introduces Haikou as the capital of Hainan Island and calls the island “China’s Florida.” He visits People’s Park around the middle of the day, saying it is about 30 degrees Celsius, hot and humid, and unusually quiet. He looks at a revolutionary memorial and reads a translated plaque using Google Translate. The translation says “King Dao Island”; he says he is unsure why and suspects it may be a translation error. He explains his understanding that the memorial honors Communist comrades who fought Nationalists in 1950. Cori crosses toward Haikou’s old town, noting that electric scooters are quiet and that pedestrians share sidewalks with them. He walks along local streets with restaurants, small shops, family businesses, a pedestrian street and market stalls. He describes the architecture as influenced by styles he associates with Europe and Southeast Asia, and says Chinese people who returned from overseas brought some of the buildings’ design. He says Haikou was used as a trading port but was never directly colonized, and that some old buildings are being preserved. He visits a wet market where he sees dried seafood, live turtles, snakes, frogs, meat, eggs and other goods, with electric scooters moving through the narrow lanes. Some of his identifications, such as the type of fish or intestines, are explicitly guesses. He later describes a payment problem: he says he can pay businesses with Alipay but could not pay one seller whose account was set up as a private person. He finds the old clock tower, which he says was built in the 1920s, destroyed during the Cultural Revolution and rebuilt. He does not give a filming month.
Cori explores Haikou on Hainan Island, starting at People’s Park before walking through the old town, pedestrian streets, local shops and a wet market. He comments on the heat, quiet electric scooters, the mix of architecture and the city’s local businesses. He describes a revolutionary memorial and the old clock tower, then talks about an Alipay payment issue he encounters as a foreign visitor.
