Backpacker Ben teams up with CarryOnCat for a playful, no holds barred night in Shanghai’s notoriously low-rated lodging. In this cheeky installment, they deliberately check into the city’s worst rated hotel to entertain their audience, sharing their reactions, quirks of the room, and the overall experience of staying somewhere that lives up to its reputation. The video leans into humor and candid commentary, inviting viewers to see what a one-star hotel in a bustling Chinese city actually feels like from a traveler’s perspective, including the tiny comforts, odd décor, and the surprising moments that come with an intentionally rough stay.

Backpacker Ben and his travel companion Katarina set out to experience Shanghai's worst-rated hotel, a one-star establishment costing just £10 a night. Before the challenge, they travel from Guangzhou to Shanghai via high-speed train, with Katarina enjoying business class while Ben rides economy. Upon arrival in Shanghai, they first stay in a mediocre £40 hotel with a dismal view before checking into the infamous cheap hotel. The room tour reveals cigarette-stained sheets, moldy walls, suspicious brown stains, and a bathroom where the shower doubles as a toilet. The night is brutal: chain-smoking neighbors, vibrating karaoke until past 1 AM, and a pervasive smell of smoke. Earlier, Ben finally attempts eating chicken feet—both fresh from a market stall and pre-packaged—finding the texture fatty and jelly-like, ultimately deciding it's not for him. They also explore the Bund, sightsee the Shanghai Tower, and get denied entry to a Michelin-starred restaurant for wearing tracky bottoms. After a sleepless night, they escape to Seoul, South Korea, where they later get caught in a blizzard.
Traveler Backpacker Ben dares to stay in Shanghai's worst-rated hotel for just £10 a night, enduring moldy walls, cigarette smoke, and all-night karaoke. Along the way, he bravely tries chicken feet for the first time and explores Shanghai's Bund and French Quarter.
Backpacker Ben survives Shanghai's worst £10 hotel, braves chicken feet, and struggles with karaoke and smoke before escaping to South Korea.

The non-stop karaoke, chain-smoking neighbors, and the smell of cigarettes. It was brutal and I barely slept!
What did the chicken feet taste like?
The fresh ones were fatty, jelly-like texture was too much for me. I spat out one part and eventually gave up.
Did you really try the bagged chicken feet?
Yes, they were pre-packaged and looked like something from Alien vs. Predator. The ankle part was okay, but I couldn't finish the rest.
Why did you get refused at the restaurant?
We were wearing tracky bottoms, which didn't meet their dress code. So we ended up eating dumplings from a street stall instead.
How was the high-speed train in China?
Incredible value. For £85, I traveled 7 hours in economy with plenty of space. Back in the UK, that price gets you a worse 3-hour train.
