Day 11 of my solo travel adventure in China and my last day in Chengdu. Today I went to the panda research base and explored Chengdu city with a local. The pandas were incredible to see up close—these gentle giants are truly China's national treasure. After the base, we wandered through the city's laid-back neighborhoods. Chengdu feels unhurried, with people sipping tea in parks and playing mahjong on street corners. The food scene is amazing: we had hotpot that was spicy but incredibly flavorful. By night, the city transforms into a neon-lit cyberpunk wonderland. I even stumbled upon a local dating corner in the park, which was fascinating to watch. This city lives up to its reputation as China's most relaxed city. If you ever visit China, don't skip Chengdu.

On day 11 of his solo China trip, Oskar rises before dawn to visit the Chengdu Panda Research Base—the only place to see giant pandas active in the morning chill. He marvels at the lack of barriers between him and the bears, watches a red panda stroll literally at his feet, and even spots a peacock. After a bamboo-filled morning, he meets Eddie, a local he befriended the day before. Eddie leads him off the tourist trail to a repurposed factory district teeming with young hipsters, where they sample a sugar-free jasmine green milk tea that Oskar finds too bland. They wander past a bridge where locals get ear-cleaning massages as the sun sets, and finally to the iconic neon bamboo sticks that light up the night. Oskar reflects on the city’s relaxed vibe, the ease of public transport, and the constant availability of phone-charging stations. He bids Eddie farewell, promising to return, and prepares to head to Xi'an tomorrow.
Oskar’s final day in Chengdu blends wild pandas with local charm. He escapes the tourist trail alongside Eddie, a Chengdu local, discovering a repurposed factory district packed with young creatives, sipping sugar-free jasmine milk tea, and watching ear-cleaning stalls by a glowing bridge. The city’s neon-lit bamboo sticks and chilled-out nightlife show a side of China that’s relaxed, trendy, and surprisingly human.
Oskar explores Chengdu's Panda Base, then joins local Eddie for trendy hipster spots, night markets, and glowing bamboo sticks. A relaxed, authentic day in China.

They looked like foxes and were way more active than the black-and-white ones. You could walk inside their enclosure and they'd come right up to your feet.
Did you need a ticket to enter the panda base?
Yes, I bought an early ticket for 7 AM to see the pandas when they're active. It was worth it.
What was the most surprising thing you found in Chengdu?
Probably the ear-cleaning stalls by the bridge—they use a stick with a light on their head and you can get a massage at the same time.
How did you get around the city?
I used Apple Maps and the Chinese app AMap for the subway and buses. It was very straightforward with no mistakes.
