It's Uyghur, not Chinese. I learned to say 'yes' (Yus) and 'thank you' (Rahmat)!
What was the food like?
The noodles were salty and flavorful, and I found many Halal options. The lamb with rice was tasty, but the sour and spicy side dish was a bit too much for me!
What surprised me the most?
Probably the army tanks welcoming us and how different Ürümqi felt compared to other Chinese cities I've visited. It felt like a different country altogether!
What was it like interacting with the locals?
Everyone was very friendly and welcoming, even though communication could be a challenge sometimes. I met a medical student who was also a dancer, which was really cool!
What's the Grand Bazaar like?
It's a lively marketplace with lots of traditional clothes and goods. I even bought a traditional hat to blend in, although I think it made me stand out even more!
