This video cuts through the shiny, futuristic image of China to show the real, everyday Beijing. The editor frames the journey as a dive into the Hutongs, the ancient alleyways where ordinary people live, work, and play. Travelers Ben and Reine wander through a local evening market, marveling at the dirt-cheap produce and vibrant street life. They explore Nanluoguxiang, the most touristy hutong, but quickly discover that the real magic lies just a few streets away—where prices drop and authenticity rises. The couple samples classic Beijing street food: succulent lamb skewers from Xinjiang, thick yogurt in glass bottles (which they hilariously struggle to open), and juicy beef pies that squirt hot juice on Reine's face. But the standout moment is an unexpected, joyful encounter with local elders dancing in a park at dusk. The editor highlights the stark contrast between this safe, community-filled scene and what one might find in a similar park in the UK. The video concludes with a tour of their eco-friendly boutique hotel, the NOA HOTEL, tucked right in the heart of the Hutongs—a perfect base for soaking in the city's genuine character.
In this video, the editors cut through the futuristic hype to reveal the authentic, everyday Beijing that tourists often miss. Travelers Ben and Reine lead us through the ancient Hutongs, where locals shop, eat, and dance. It’s a refreshing, grounded look at the city’s real soul—where 700-year-old alleys meet modern life, and where the best discoveries cost just a few yuan.
Ben and Reine explore Beijing's hidden Hutongs, discovering real local life, street food, and nightly park dances, far from the city's futuristic image.

They are ancient alleyways, some over 700 years old, where real locals live, shop, and hang out. It's the oldest part of Beijing.
Is the street food in the Hutongs expensive?
Not really. On the main tourist street prices are a bit higher, but just two alleys down you find real cheap bargain places.
What was the most surprising moment?
The park dancing! Seeing all the aunties, uncles, and families dancing in the park at night was amazing. It's so safe and active compared to parks in the UK.
What is the yogurt like?
It comes in a glass bottle with a straw. It's very thick, creamy, and plain—good for cooling down after spicy food.
