This video by Lizzy, who lives in China, offers a comprehensive look into the financial aspects of working in China as a foreigner, primarily focusing on ESL teaching. Lizzy breaks down the salary expectations for ESL teachers in both major cities like Shanghai and Beijing, and smaller cities like Qingdao. In larger cities, salaries range from 18,000 to 30,000 RMB per month, varying depending on experience and employer type, with public schools offering lower pay than private institutions. Smaller cities show a lower salary range of 10,000 to 18,000 RMB, but the lower cost of living often allows for significant savings.
Lizzy uses her personal experience in Qingdao to illustrate this point, providing specific examples of teacher salaries and living costs. She highlights the contrast between the high cost of living in major cities, particularly rent and transportation, and the more affordable lifestyle in smaller cities. She emphasizes that while rent in Shanghai or Beijing can reach 10,000 RMB per month, a comparable apartment in Qingdao costs significantly less.
Beyond salary, Lizzy discusses the benefits packages offered by many schools, which can include housing allowances, flight reimbursements, health insurance, and even Mandarin lessons. She also advises viewers to carefully examine contracts and understand the terms before accepting a position. Lizzy's personal experience includes a loan provided by her initial employer to help her settle in, which was deducted from her salary over three months. She also offers valuable job-seeking advice, such as researching cities thoroughly, understanding contract terms, and networking with others in the field. The video concludes with Lizzy's personal endorsement of life in China, emphasizing the cultural richness, safety, beauty, and affordability that make it a desirable place to live and work. Overall, the video provides a balanced and insightful perspective on the financial realities and personal experiences of working as an ESL teacher in China, making it a valuable resource for prospective expats.
