Why is everyone suddenly talking about this city that most people outside China barely knew about a year ago? But is the city actually as glamorous in real life as it looks online? I landed in Chongqing and grabbed a $2 Wan Za Mian, then went to a bomb shelter hot pot. I took a premium taxi, saw Hong Ya Cave at night, checked out the biggest coffee chain in China, and even explored Chinese Adidas. I rode the Chongqing cable car, tried Gui Bao Zi dumplings, and hit the Three Natural Bridges — epic nature! After that, I enjoyed fancy Chinese food, relaxed at an aesthetic cafe, took a viral motorcycle ride, and finished with an epic cinematic experience before sharing my thoughts on Chongqing.

Jimmy arrives in Chongqing late at night and takes a ride-hailing car to his hotel. He starts with Wanza Mian, a local noodle dish with minced pork and chickpeas, then visits a hot pot restaurant in a former bomb shelter and orders spicy and tomato broths. He takes a premium taxi, sees Hong Ya Cave illuminated at night, tries coffee and China-only Adidas styles, rides the cable car across the river, and eats dumplings. A day trip takes him to Three Natural Bridges, where he walks a paved route and uses an elevator to reach below the cliff. Back in the city, he tries Chongqing dishes including laz gi and a large rice-based ball, visits a cafe with a temple view, and films a motorcycle ride with a Chinese-drama-style storyline. He says the city lived up to the online attention, especially for food and scenery.
Jimmy spends about 100 hours exploring Chongqing through food, city views and a day trip to Three Natural Bridges. He tries Wanza Mian, a bomb-shelter hot pot, local dumplings and Chongqing dishes, rides the cable car, visits Hong Ya Cave and a temple-view cafe, and films a motorcycle-themed short drama. He describes Chongqing as a large, lively city with affordable food and striking scenery.

Chongqing Food, Night Views and Three Natural Bridges
3:37 Jimmy describes Wanza Mian as noodles with minced pork and chickpeas, a dish he says locals eat regularly. He adds an egg and cilantro; ask about ingredients and spice if you have dietary needs.
7:42 The hot pot restaurant serves separate spicy and tomato broths, and Jimmy finds the spicy side too hot for him. If you are sensitive to chili, choose a milder broth or start with a small amount.
10:46 For a view of Hong Ya Cave, Jimmy says the bridge above it is a better place to watch than the crowded lower level. He found the crowds below so dense that people could barely walk.
11:33 Jimmy says you do not have to show up at 8:00 just to see Hong Ya Cave light up. He found the view impressive, but says the lower area was so crowded that people could barely walk.
14:15 The cable car crosses the river between the central peninsula and the opposite side. Jimmy says a taxi can cost less, so treat the cable car as a scenic experience rather than the cheapest way to cross.
16:04 Three Natural Bridges is about two hours’ drive from Chongqing according to Jimmy. He says the route is paved and an elevator helps visitors reach below the cliff; he visited with a travel agency.

Jimmy describes it as Chongqing noodles with minced pork and chickpeas. He adds an egg and cilantro and says the dish has Sichuan pepper flavor.
Is Chongqing hot pot very spicy?
Jimmy orders a split pot with spicy and tomato broths and says the spicy side becomes too hot for him. The restaurant’s pepper-heavy broth may be challenging if you are sensitive to chili.
Where can you view Hong Ya Cave at night?
Jimmy recommends watching from the bridge above rather than going down into the very crowded area. He says the buildings light up around 8 p.m., though arriving exactly then is not necessary.
Can you visit Three Natural Bridges as a day trip from Chongqing?
Jimmy says the site is within about two hours’ drive and that he went with a travel agency. He describes a paved walking route and an elevator to reach below the cliff.
What non-spicy food does Jimmy try?
He visits a dumpling place for steamed pork buns and pan-fried dumplings, which he describes as crispy and juicy.
