For centuries, China's rivers have been vital to its survival. People from villages across the country used them to travel to the cities and sell their goods and wares. These rivers were once filled with thousands of boats carrying passengers in every direction. But today, China's road and highway network has become so vast and efficient that those boats became useless and went extinct. Except one. We found the last boat still operating for traders on the Yangtze River. But how is it surviving? Live streaming. The crew live stream the entire journey. Every second of it. And over 20,000 people tune in to watch. Many of them donate money. Enough that the boat runs for free. I wanted to document this boat. To find out whether this is truly a beautiful human story. Or a dystopian exploitation of the working class. enjoy, mike x
Mike Okay takes us on the last surviving river trading boat on the Yangtze, where live-streaming donations keep it afloat. Is this a heartwarming community story or a dystopian twist on labor? Watch the full journey to decide.
