What is it actually like to live completely off the grid, herding livestock at the edge of the world? I’m traveling deep into the rugged Qilian Mountains in China to spend a full, grueling, and eye-opening 24 hours with traditional Tibetan nomads.
This isn't just a visit—I'm putting on my boots and joining the family to live their daily life. From herding massive herds of stubborn yaks across high-altitude grasslands to seeing incredible wild animals roaming free against the snow-capped mountain peaks, this was one of the most physically demanding yet beautiful experiences of my life.
Along the way, I made an incredibly unlikely friend—a spirited, laughing little Tibetan boy who took me under his wing, showed me the ropes of herding, and reminded me of the beautiful, universal language of friendship, no matter where you are in the world.
Prepare for jaw-dropping landscapes, countless animals, nomadic traditions, and an unforgettable journey into the heart of China’s wild west.

The creator says the group is in the Qilian Mountains beside nomads and notes that it is six degrees on an August morning. A goat enters their van, then the creator goes to look for marmots and identifies them as Himalayan marmots, also called snow pigs by local people. Local herders call for help moving yaks up a mountain. In the car, the creator says herders pay 26 RMB per yak each year for insurance and could receive 3,000 RMB back in certain cases involving a lost, injured or sick yak or one eaten by a snow leopard. He points out a temple beside the road but does not name it. A local boy takes the visitors to his home for tea, rides their bikes and shows them around. Neighbors bring broccoli, a watermelon and yak meat. The creator then helps with the family's annual yak vaccination day and describes the animals being guided into a pen. The family says the summer grazing season is nearly over and that they will later walk the herd to its winter village in a two-day journey through the passes. The transcript names Qinghai but does not identify a city or the roadside temple. It mentions snow leopards as animals found in the area, not a direct sighting by the creator.
