This video follows Deana And Phil's exciting culinary exploration of Shanghai's street food scene. Their adventure begins with a nostalgic revisit to Shanghai University campus, where they indulge in Jian Bing, a loaded crepe-like breakfast dish. Deana, having studied abroad in Shanghai years ago, shares personal memories of this beloved street food, highlighting its fresh preparation and customizable options. The couple's journey then leads them to a bustling dumpling shop, where they sample a variety of local dumplings, including the unique Shanghai-style Chaai, filled with sticky rice, mushrooms, and pork. Deana And Phil's struggle to order in Chinese adds a humorous touch to their experience, showcasing the authenticity of their interactions with local vendors.
Their exploration continues through the charming streets of the Yuan area, a blend of traditional architecture and modern shops. They admire the unique fusion of German and Chinese architectural styles, marveling at the pedestrian-friendly streets and the abundance of shops and restaurants. The aroma of chocolate leads them to a shop selling intricate chocolate figurines, but their culinary focus quickly shifts to savory options. They try Shang B, pan-fried dumplings with a crispy bottom, and express their delight at the blend of textures and flavors. Deana And Phil's exploration includes a less-than-stellar experience with a Chinese sausage, followed by a refreshing fruit tea to cleanse their palates.
The video culminates in a visit to the Yu Garden area, though unfortunately, their arrival is too late to enter the garden itself. However, they still appreciate the beautiful architecture, lights, and the lively atmosphere. They end their food tour with a taste of Shaolongbao, famous soup dumplings, expressing their awe at the flavorful explosion within each dumpling. Throughout the video, Deana And Phil's enthusiasm is contagious, their personal insights and emotional connections to the food and places they visit create a truly engaging narrative. Their experience highlights the unique charm and diverse culinary offerings of Shanghai, making it a must-watch for anyone planning a trip to this vibrant city.

That's a tough one! I really loved the Shang B dumplings with the crispy bottom, but the Jian Bing brought back such great memories from my study abroad days.
What was the most surprising thing you encountered?
Probably the $1 haircut! And that I didn't need a ticket to enter the Zhu-long cave!
What advice would you give to others trying Shanghai street food?
Be adventurous! Don't be afraid to try new things, even if you don't know what it is. And be prepared to order in Chinese at some of the more authentic places. It's part of the fun!
